ELORA – Centre Wellington council recently approved a recommendation to support the redevelopment of a balcony at an historic landmark.
The heritage building, known as the Commercial Hotel, once had a distinct balcony that overhung onto the sidewalk at 43 West Mill Street in Elora.
That encroachment onto township property was an issue for several members of council, including Kim Jefferson, who was hesitant to see the idea of encroachment to restore older building features spread.
Colin Baker, managing director of infrastructure services at the township, reassured staff the balcony meets all AODA standards, while Mayor Shawn Watters dubbed the idea of the encroachment a “special situation,” and a chance to restore an iconic building.
Baker told staff this is a unique circumstance.
He went on to say it will look similar to its original state, with some practical differences.
Watters said this will be great for Elora, drawing eyes on the horizon and setting the tone.
