WELLINGTON COUNTY – In only the program’s first two years, Guelph-Wellington’s Commercial Food Waste Diversion Collective reports they have made more than 62,000 meals available to the food insecure. As well they have diverted 400 tonnes of surplus food and organic waste from disposal, and recovered more than $214,000 worth of surplus edible food.
The program, according to Coordinator Maggie Bain, has two key initiatives; organic waste diversion and enabling surplus food donation services for businesses.
Bain says several local businesses are already on board.
Bain says there are distinct environmental impacts of the program, as well as a sense of collaboration within the community.
Bain explains small and medium-sized businesses in the community often run up against a wall of costs and get charged a premium for hauling services.
She went on to say the drop in cost reflects rates for similar services.
