Wellington County staff are looking for solutions to provide recycling service to small operations that will no longer have their recyclables collected under the new producer-paid model.
While most larger industrial, commercial and institutional operations already pay for recycling pick-up, some smaller organizations currently using municipal pick-up will left to find their own solution.
Staff recommended service continue for businesses in 14 downtown core areas. Still, Warden Andy Lennox says council wanted to make sure that no one was stuck hauling their recycling to a depot themselves or putting recyclables into the garbage where it will end up in landfills.
“Things like law offices, churches, those types of things are going to be the most impacted, where they might have a small amount of recycling,” explained Lennox. “We’re trying to find solutions.”
Council also asked staff to look into changing the proposed pick-up of Mondays at 6 a.m. to a more convenient time for small business owners. Some on council expressed concern recycling could be left out all weekend if people cannot put their blue boxes out early Monday morning.
