The long weekend is here and police will be out making sure people are driving safely.
The Victoria Day long weekend also coincides with Canada Road Safety Week, which runs from May 14 to 20.
Wellington County OPP Constable Joshua Cunningham says this weekend, like always, they will be looking for the “big four.”
“We’re talking about speeds on the roadways that are not safe, we’re talking about impaired driving – and that’s by drug or alcohol, we’re talking about seatbelts and other safety equipment and we’re also talking about distracted driving,” explained Cunningham.
While the nice weather makes the roads seem safer than the winter months, Cunningham says collisions are much more severe.
“In the nicer climate, roads are dry, the sun is out and everything appears to be great, there’s a habit for people to drive faster,” Cunningham said. “Those faster collisions cause much more severe damage.”
Cunningham says he recognizes people are anxious to get out and enjoy the nice weather but he urges everyone to slow down and be safe.
