GUELPH ERAMOSA – Guelph Eramosa Township is moving ahead with a pilot project to install speed humps along two stretches of road.
The pilot will include the entire length of McLennan Street in Rockwood and Conservation Road, just outside of Guelph, from Highway 6 to Victoria Road North.
Harry Niemi, director of public works, explained to council at Monday’s meeting, it had been staff’s intention to include McLennan Street in the initial report to council and council agreed to include it when voting on the proposal.
“McLennan going into the school continues to be a concern,” explained Niemi. “It’s likely people that live there or people bringing their children to the school that are the ones that are speeding but they are the ones we need to slow down.”
Speeding on Conservation Road is also a problem and the Township already installed delineators – those orange posts with reflective strips – and a permanent radar sign but speeds are not dropping like they had hoped.
Mayor Chris White says the two roads will provide great samples given one is a very urban road and the other is through-way for people commuting from Fergus to Guelph.
However, councillor Corey Woods urged his colleagues to consider Cross Creek Boulevard as well.
“People get off of Highway 6, Cross Creek is a winding road, there are no sidewalks so people are forced to walk on the road,” explained Woods. “You can’t put delineators on cross creek because there is parking on the road to it’s not a candidate for delineators.”
Council gave staff approval to place two to three speed humps on Conservation Road and also to place speed humps on McLennan Street. The funding was already included in the capital budget.
Once the speed humps are in place, staff will replace traffic counters used to determine ideal site locations to monitor the effectiveness of the measures. Staff are expected to provide an update on the project in August.
