Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health wants to know your experiences and perceptions about drinking alcohol.
They have launched a survey for people 16 and older. If you participate you are entered to win a $100 dollar gift card.
“One of our many jobs is to be able to tell the public about the harms associated with a substance like alcohol,” explained Anna Vanderlaan, manager of health promotion at WDGPH. “In order to do that effectively, we need to understand what does the public think about using alcohol, so by asking about attitudes, behaviours and beliefs around alcohol use, we can make sure that everyone has the information they need to make informed choices about things like drinking.”
The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction released Canada’s Guidance on Alcohol and Health last year, showing that drinking just three to six standard drinks per week increases your chances of developing some cancers like breast and colon cancer. Seven or more drinks a week significantly increases you risk of heart attack and stroke.
The survey also comes as the province relaxes rules around alcohol sales, allowing convenience stores to sell the products.
“One of the questions we are going to ask in our survey is ‘How do people currently access alcohol?” said Vanderlaan. “I think it’s important for us to know more about that, to know more about behaviours. And we’re measuring this now and we can measure it again in the future to see how [allowing alcohol sales in convenience stores] has impacted alcohol behaviours.”
