WELLINGTON COUNTY – Youth gaming and gambling is on the rise and has left many families asking how to address the issue within their own families.
Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health and Homewood Health Centre will host a virtual parent information session on “Youth Gambling and Gaming” with hosts Associate Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Matthew Tenenbaum, and Sylvie Smith, a therapist specializing in addiction and mental health at Homewood Health Centre.
Danny Williamson, Communications Specialist with public health, says they have held parent information sessions on gaming before but questions and concerns from the community and across society as a whole, has led to the Tuesday event.
He says the Tuesday session will offer tips to parents on how to talk to their kids about gaming and gambling while offering some solutions to handle worrying situations, including by modeling their behavior.
The session will also discuss the mental health component of excessive gaming and gambling and Williamson stresses this could apply to all ages.
Registration for the virtual event is available at wdgpublichealth.ca/YouthGamblingGamingEvent and the session will be available for viewing following the original broadcast.
