ELORA – Wellington County OPP has laid an assault charge following an incident that occurred after a hockey game in Elora on the weekend.
In a news release, OPP say they responded to a report of a disturbance at the Elora Community Centre on Friday at around 11 pm.
Police say as a result of the investigation James Petrie, a 54-year-old from Stratford was charged with assault.
OPP say the accused was arrested on scene and has since been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in a Guelph court next month.
In a statement, the Ontario Super Hockey League (OSHL) said “We are aware of an incident that occurred last (Friday) night in Elora involving OSHL Director and Stratford Head Coach and GM Jamie Petrie. As of 3pm today we have accepted Jamie’s resignation.”
The league went on to say that the “OSHL is committed to providing a safe environment for all of its players, staff, and fans. We will continue to implement this moving forward.”
The Elora Rocks also issued a statement acknowledging the league’s “swift and appropriate handling of the matter”.
“It’s reassuring to know they prioritize the safety of players, staff, and everyone involved in the game,” the statement read. “To our fans, we sincerely apologize for what took place. We do not condone violence in any form and deeply regret that our valued community — young and old — had to witness such an incident. Thank you for your understanding as we move forward together.”
