MINTO – Following a report on homelessness and low income housing, the Town of Minto’s deputy mayor is making a case for more mental health resources county-wide.
The report was presented by David Anderson, county councillor and vice chair of the Social Services Committee, in Minto on Tuesday.
The Deputy Mayor of Minto Jean Anderson made a lengthy remark following the staff report, pointing out perceived shortfallings in the area. She said the Here 24 service, which offers mental health counselling locally, is understaffed and struggling to keep up with demand.
She went on to say shelters are lacking in the county as well.
David Anderson in response said the county is looking to add local shelter within the year, as well as two new health clinicians in Northern Wellington.
The deputy mayor went on to detail Here 24 uses Zoom to maximize the number of visits it can arrange, but says getting psychiatric help is still a challenge for many.
Minto Mayor Dave Turton thanked both David and his wife for their continued work in this domain. He went on to extend appreciation on behalf of the rest of council for the Andersons’ work on what he called an interesting conversation.
