WELLINGTON COUNTY – January marks Alzheimer’s Awareness Month in Canada. Locally, one focus is in the spotlight.
That focus is brain health. Executive Director of the Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington Michelle Martin tells the Grand at 101 awareness of the importance of brain health is crucial, and the motivation behind local programming this month.
Martin went on to explain the top two things people can do to limit their risk or slow the effects if they live with dementia are to be active socially and live a mobile lifestyle.
She added this is a topic that should be discussed year round, for the sake of people closer to you than you may realize.
Ending the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s and dementia is also a year-round effort for the society. Martin says it’s important to get to the point where people living with dementia are regarded as the contributing members of society they are.
She went on to explain taking care of your brain should be the main takeaway during this awareness month.
Martin also reminds residents anyone can learn more about Alzheimer’s and dementia, not just those living with it, and encourages those interested to reach out to the society.
