WELLINGTON COUNTY – The Wellington County Library (WCL) is celebrating what they called an “extraordinary” 2024, with more than 447,000 visitors to its fourteen branches.
It’s the first time since 2016 Wellington County Library circulated over a million items, leaping over both COVID and pre-pandemic numbers.
Laura Shtern, Wellington County Library’s Information Services Librarian for Collections, says while the obvious attraction is flipping through a book, the importance of libraries stems from a variety of community services.
Shtern also mentioned the value of providing spaces for relaxation, leisure and study.
She says one specific age group continues to be on the upswing.
While digital engagement was a focus, Shtern says old fashioned books are still one of many ways to get involved.
Looking ahead to the year at hand, Shtern added a new branch in Erin is the focus. She also highlighted work with the Alzheimer’s Society Waterloo Wellington to create cognitive activity kits ready for use by local seniors.
WCL reports 4,500 new library cards issued in 2024.
