WELLINGTON COUNTY – One of several instances where childcare/daycare was a focus in Wellington County was spearheaded by Centre Wellington Mayor Shawn Watters last year.
This time around, the topic was at county chambers for discussion brought to life by councillor Mary Lloyd.
A recent event on the subject, says Lloyd, was hosted in part by councillor Diane Ballantyne, who responded to Lloyd’s remarks, calling the problem “a crisis.”
This event was focused around the lack of available childcare Wellington County-wide.
Lloyd spoke at a council meeting Thursday, and said the amount of childcare in Centre Wellington in particular is lagging behind the standard clip.
Lloyd confirmed this issue exists outside of Centre Wellington as well. She says Erin is the only municipality that currently has adequate daycare across the county.
Lloyd also detailed a location where the deficit could begin to be chipped away at.
Lloyd proposed this project be paid for by a portion of a surplus that came from last year’s tax levies, and painted a picture of the average family trying to provide care for their child, making note of the dire state of affairs.
“We need these spaces for children,” said Lloyd, as the lack of available daycare space yet again echoed through council chambers within the county.
