CENTRE WELLINGTON – Centre Wellington council endorsed a Traffic Calming Policy Update at a meeting Monday afternoon.
Manager of Engineering Adam Gilmore gave the update to council at the meeting.
He explained this policy update is a way to get council’s “buy-in” and make them aware of progress, and what’s to come with a multi-year traffic calming effort.
A widely-used measure by municipalities and police, Gilmore says the 85th percentile speed has been a driving force thus far.
The 85th percentile speed, he says, is the speed at which 85 per cent of drivers drive at, or slower.
Gilmore added he understands some may see a lack of continuity between speed limits as it stands, but is confident the best approach is being taken.
Gilmore says if you’ve been noticing more flexible bollards around town, that isn’t by happenstance. He says the bollards, which are plastic sticks in the centre of the roadway, have been very effective.
As far as next steps? In Gilmore’s eyes the path the township is on is a good one. He shared sentiments of maintaining the course.
Gilmore says this report formalizes the work of the ongoing program as staff continue to work through the grid.
