WELLINGTON COUNTY – National Indigenous History Month in the Upper Grand District School Board will be marked by learning opportunities for educators and students, in and out of the classroom.
This year’s calendar for local teachers includes pre-learning for teachers, hands-on experiences, guests speakers and much more.
While conversations will be had about colonialism, K-12 Program Lead of Indigenous Education Jerica Fraser says that will not be the focus.
To the same tune, Co-ordinating Principal of Indigenous Education at UGDSB. Colinda Clyne, explains this is a time this is a time for joy.
Educators will have access to weekly themes as well as activities for all age groups. Themes include Indigenous Knowledge and Contributions – Historic and Contemporary, Allyship and Action and more.
Fraser says these themes begin at a crucial, and natural point.
A tool for teachers too, the opportunity to explore Canadian Geographic’s Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada Giant Floor Map, staff say will be a really engaging, question provoking exercise.
Fraser explains framing land acknowledgements around more than just where a child’s school may reside will also be a focus.
Connie Howald, Indigenous Education Elementary Resource Coach within the board, says it’s crucial to those involved that the education and conversation span year-round, not just during this month of recognition.
The board has compiled a full calendar marking happenings within the region:
