MEDIA RELEASE COUNTY OF WELLINGTON
Aboyne, Ont.– Wellington County Museum and Archives (WCMA) hosts the 2nd Annual Strawberry Festival on Saturday, June 21, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.
The festival celebrates a tradition of deep historical significance. “Strawberry festivals have deep roots dating back to the late 1800s,” explains Mike McGill, Museum Programming Assistant. “In many Ontario farming communities, the strawberry harvest marked the beginning of summer bounty and was often the first major social gathering following the spring planting season. Last year, thousands joined us to celebrate, and we’re expecting an even bigger turnout this year.”
Councillor Doug Breen, Information, Heritage and Seniors Committee Chair, emphasized the festival’s significance to the community: “Wellington County is known for authentic local food experiences, from farm-to-table dining to on-farm activities. The Strawberry Festival beautifully honours the importance of local agriculture while supporting our farmers, bringing the community together, and showcasing what makes this region so special.”
The event celebrates the local bounty with many strawberry-themed treats, including what may be the best strawberry shortcake you’ve ever eaten.
Festival highlights include:
- Market featuring local artisan crafts and products
- Live entertainment throughout the afternoon
- Food Zone with local food trucks
- Interactive activities with crafts and educational stations for all ages
Special Feature: The Teddy Bear Caper Beginning at 1:00 p.m., participants in the Teddy Bear Caper contest can compete to see which beloved teddy bears are best dressed, smallest and largest, have the funniest name, are the best dancer, and more.
“This event promises to be a delicious day of entertainment and activities for the whole family,” added McGill.
All are welcome to attend, and admission is by donation. As part of Wellington County’s commitment to the environment, attendees are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles to use at the WCMA water station outside of the Archives and use the recycling stations throughout the event.
