CENTRE WELLINGTON – A draft bylaw to go before Centre Wellington council on Monday recommends staff collaborate with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Working Group, Indigenous Partners and the local lacrosse organizations to finalize a display for the Jefferson Elora Community Centre.
As a part of the implementation of this process, a report describes a structured, five phase plan.
Phase 1 will be setting the context. The other four phases will cover the likes of community education, community acknowledgment and more.
Direction from the draft bylaw to head before council states Indigenous-themed names or logos previously displayed may only be reinstated following township review and approval, in consultation with Indigenous partners.
It goes on to say any reinstated imagery must be accompanied by an educational component like a plaque or digital content. Display of new Indigenous themed names, logos or imagery by non-Indigenous organizations will not be permitted within or on township facilities and properties.
