CENTRE WELLINGTON – Centre Wellington has endorsed intersection improvements across Fergus and Elora.
At Monday’s council meeting, Manager of Engineering, Adam Gilmore, presented the recommendations from the Active Transportation and Mobility Plan that would see four intersections improved for the safety of school-aged children and the public with the hiring of four new crossing guards to begin in September 2025 for a cost of $17,500.00.
Intersections recommended for improvements include:

- David Street & Irvine Street in Elora – the intersection is a three-legged one-way stop. Staff are recommending a controlled pedestrian crossing.
- Beatty Line and Millage Lane, and Elliott Ave in Fergus – the intersection is a two-way stop, a pedestrian signal is also present on the southside of the intersection. Staff are recommending maintaining the pedestrian signal and supplementing it with a new crossing guard posted at this location starting in September 2025.
- Beatty Line and Side Road 18, and Farley Road in Fergus – the intersection is a two-way stop, staff are recommending implementing an all-way stop at this intersection in Summer 2025, with a new crossing guard posted at this location starting in September 2025 in anticipation of the opening of Grand River Public School on Elliot Avenue East.
- Gartshore Street and Middleton Avenue, and Forfar Street in Fergus – the intersection is a two-way stop, a PXO crossing Gartshore Street is located approximately 130 meters north of the intersection, at the location of the Elora-Cataract Trail crossing. Staff recommend that a new crossing guard be posted there starting in September 2025, and that it be signed and painted as a school crossing.
Further decisions for these four intersection improvements will be considered in the capital improvements of the 2026 Capital Budget Development Process, including the installation of a controlled pedestrian crossing at David Street and Irvine Street in Elora, as well as full traffic signals at Beatty Line and Millage Lane and Beatty Line and Side Road 18.
Council approved endorsing the proposed intersection improvements, and also approved the hiring of four new crossing guards to begin in September 2025.
