ONTARIO – The Ontario Provincial Police will be out in force over the Civic Holiday long weekend.
In a video posted to the OPP West Region X, Sgt. Ed Sanchuk says people can expect to see an increased police presence on our roadways, waterways, and trails this weekend.
Sanchuk says police will also be focusing on the ‘Ontario Move Over Law’, which requires drivers to move over or slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of a highway with its lights activated.
When approaching a stopped emergency or service vehicle with lights activated, drivers must:
- Slow – Reduce your speed and, if safe, move into another lane.
- Signal – Use your turn signal to indicate your intention to change lanes.
- Side – Move to the right side of the road, clear of intersections.
- Stop – If you cannot safely move over, come to a complete stop before reaching the emergency vehicle or allowing it to pass.
Police remind road users that these measures can go a long way towards making it a zero-fatality/injury long weekend that has everyone getting to and from their destination safely.
