A Dufferin County man faces more than three dozen charges after a traffic stop in Guelph Saturday led to the recovery of $27,000 in fentanyl and other drugs.
Approximately 9:30 a.m. an officer with the Guelph Police Traffic Enforcement Unit was patrolling in the area of Imperial Road North and Massey Road when he observed a motorcycle being driven in a manner which caused the officer to be suspicious. The officer got closer and the cruiser’s automated licence plate reader alerted to a plate associated with a suspended driver.
A second Traffic officer was in the area and observed the motorcycle stopped in traffic at a red light. The driver dropped the bike and attempted to flee on foot but was caught after a short foot pursuit.
A witness in the area told police they saw the man throwing items into a bush area while he was running. A search of the area revealed five baggies containing controlled substances – including suspected fentanyl, crystal methamphetamine, cocaine and Oxycodone — and drug paraphernalia.
During a search of the man’s property officers recovered two knives, a collapsible baton, a can of bear spray, cash and a stolen driver’s licence. The accused was also found to be the subject of 19 different driving prohibitions.
A 29-year-old Dufferin County man is charged with five counts of possessing a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, four counts of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, 19 counts of driving while prohibited and other offences. He was held for a bail hearing Tuesday.
