FERGUS – The Fergus Whalers Junior Hockey Club took to the road on the weekend for a matchup with division rivals, the Mount Forest Patriots.
It was a back-and-forth game Saturday night that featured many power play opportunities for both teams.
In the end, the Whalers fell behind early but tied it up before the second period ended on a great individual effort from Joey Martin.
With just over 4 minutes remaining, Justin Ewald beat the Mount Forest goalie for the game-winner. Bo Brimmell then hit a late empty netter to make the score 3 to 1 to clinch a season-opening victory for the Whalers.
Trevor Woods also had a solid night in the Whaler net, stopping 27 of 28 shots.
The Whalers’ home opener is this Sunday, September 21st, at the CW Sportsplex; game time is 3 pm.
The Whalers Wharf will be open for refreshments, and new Whaler Wear will be available.
