Centre Wellington council has voted to move ahead with a feasibility study for a new multi-use indoor recreation facility.
The study, tied to the township’s 2026 capital forecast, will examine costs, amenities, and potential locations, including whether to expand the existing Sportsplex or build a separate structure on the same site.
Local sports groups say demand has already outgrown current facilities. Logan LeBlanc of the Centre Wellington Celtics Basketball club told council the shortage of gym space is preventing growth. Fergus Elora District Soccer’s Curt McQueen added that a new complex would align with the township’s growth and diversity goals.
Early estimates peg the cost at $55 million, though officials note partnerships and development charges could help offset expenses. Council emphasized that approving the study does not commit the township to construction, but provides clearer information for future debate.
