BELWOOD – Centre Wellington council has approved a top-up of $980,000 as part of the 2026 capital budget for the renovation of the Belwood Hall.
The project at 37 Queen Street was first expected to cost just over $800,000, but new estimates put it closer to $1.87 million.
At Monday’s council meeting, staff said many parts of the aging hall need urgent replacement, adding time and expense.
Staff said council’s support to proceed with the project at this stage is essential to maintaining project momentum and keeping the project on schedule.
Pre-approval of the 2026 budget for this renovation project will allow staff to complete the construction and permit-ready documents and proceed with procurement activities, ensuring the project will be ready to begin construction in Spring 2026.
Staff say roughly $400,000 of the new costs are expected to come from grants, donations, and community partnerships.
The township has already received $225,000 in pledges and applied for two grants worth $310,000.
Council also agreed to look into wiring costs for a future generator at the site.
