FERGUS – Ontario Green Party Leader and Guelph MPP Mike Schreiner was in Fergus Wednesday to highlight what he describes as policy-driven causes of Ontario’s housing crisis and to promote alternatives focused on affordability and smart growth.
Schreiner toured Garafraxa Village, a Habitat for Humanity development offering affordable housing, and met with local housing advocates to discuss solutions that don’t involve expanding urban boundaries or paving over farmland. He says Ontario can meet housing needs by building more homes within existing communities and better supporting non-profit and co-operative housing providers.
During his visit, Schreiner criticized the provincial government’s housing approach, arguing that current policies have contributed to record-low housing starts, rising homelessness, and affordability challenges for nearly a quarter of Ontarians.
He also participated in a housing roundtable hosted by the Wellington–Halton Hills Green Party Riding Association, calling local projects in Fergus and Elora a model for communities across the province.
