The Upper Grand District School Board will receive an update tonight on how artificial intelligence is being introduced and managed across the system.
A report to trustees outlines a “human-centred” approach focused on equity, privacy, safety and student voice. Rather than rapidly expanding technology, the board says it has prioritized governance, staff training and ethical guidelines.
AI tools already in use include speech-to-text, translation supports and adaptive math and literacy platforms. Approved tools such as Google Gemini and Microsoft Co-Pilot are being used by educators to help differentiate instruction.
The board stresses AI will not replace teachers or make decisions about grades, placements or Individual Education Plans. Staff are also prohibited from entering identifiable student information into AI systems.
Finalized AI literacy guidelines for staff are expected to be released in April, along with continued professional development and community engagement.
