MAPLETON – A new community award has been introduced in Mapleton to remember the legacy of a well-known Drayton resident who passed away suddenly in 2024.
Mapleton Council approved the John Ford Kindness Award during its meeting Tuesday evening.
The award commemorates John Ford, a longtime Drayton Freshmart employee whose death in March 2024 deeply affected many people in the community.
Councillor Marlene Ottens proposed the idea in April 2024 to establish a community recognition award in Ford’s memory.
Ottens says she is very happy to have this come to path.
Mayor Greg Davidson said he had recently spoken with Ford’s sister, who supports the criteria for the proposed award.
According to the criteria, The John Ford Kindness Award honors the legacy of John Ford, a beloved member of the Township of Mapleton community, whose life exemplified quiet generosity, genuine humility, and a deep-rooted kindness toward others.
The prestigious annual award will recognize a Township resident who embodies John’s values and positively impacts the lives of those around them.
Council unanimously approved to establish the new award.
