GUELPH – Police are reminding residents to be cautious when dealing with unknown individuals after a Guelph man lost nearly $20,000 to a bank scam.
This week, Guelph Police say a man in his 90s reported he was contacted by someone he believed was from his bank as the bank’s toll-free phone number was on his call display.
During the lengthy call the man provided banking information and then was told his debit and credit cards had been compromised and that a courier would attend his address and collect them.
A short time later a man came to the victim’s home and was given the cards.
Police say the victim later realized his cards had been used to make $2,500 in cash withdrawals and almost $17,000 in purchases in Waterloo Region.
The incident is under investigation.
