TOWN OF MINTO – Traffic stop results in six charges. Driver caught evading MTO and OPP.
On April 4, 2026, at approximately 3:00 p.m., the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Traffic Management Unit were conducting proactive traffic enforcement when a pick-up truck was identified via our ‘Automated Licence Plate Recognition’ (ALPR) system and a traffic stop was conducted on Wellington Road 109 within the Town of Minto.
During the investigation, the following was discovered:
- The driver had used permanent marker on their licence plates, in the attempt to evade law enforcement and imitating a class designation of their licence plates contrary to their type of vehicle.
- The driver recently was stopped by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) and had their vehicle inspected, and the vehicle was deemed to be prohibited to be operated on our roadways due to safety hazards.
- Almost 2,000 unmarked cigarettes were located and seized.
As a result of the investigation, a 63-year-old of Mount Hope is charged under the Highway Traffic Act and the Tobacco Tax Act with:
- Operate unsafe vehicle
- Drive commercial motor vehicle contrary to prohibition
- Defective braking system
- Deface plate
- Use plate not authorized for vehicle
- Possess unmarked cigarettes
The accused involved is scheduled to appear in the Provincial Offences Court – Guelph at a later date.
