CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Township of Centre Wellington is choosing not to move forward with a new provincial program that would allow people to bring their own alcohol to outdoor festivals and events.
That’s according to a new staff report to be presented to the council on Monday. Staff is recommending the township not opt in to the Province of Ontario’s “Bring-Your-Own” alcohol framework at this time.
The program would give municipalities the option to permit personal alcohol consumption within designated event areas, but staff say it comes with several concerns.
Those include challenges around monitoring consumption levels, preventing overconsumption and intoxication, enforcing age restrictions, and
managing impaired behaviour.
The report also raises questions about liability, insurance coverage, and the added pressure it could place on event organizers—particularly smaller community groups.
Staff say the framework may not align with Centre Wellington’s focus on family-friendly events and controlled alcohol service. At this point, there’s also little indication of strong demand locally, and the benefits remain unclear.
Staff are recommending that Centre Wellington not opt-in to the BYO Framework. The report will be presented to council at Monday’s 6pm meeting.
