CENTRE WELLINGTON – A decision on short-term rental rules in Centre Wellington is being put on hold.
At Monday’s meeting, council deferred a proposed bylaw to regulate and license short-term rentals, along with a zoning amendment, until the next term of council.
The move follows months of debate and public input, with residents voicing concerns on both sides of the issue, including parking, enforcement, and housing availability.
While most councillors initially leaned toward approving the bylaw, that changed after clarification from the township’s managing director of planning and development, Brett Salmon.
Salmon explained that if passed, the zoning changes would take effect immediately, and any future changes would require a full public process.
Mayor Shawn Watters called the decision a difficult one, saying the council isn’t quite ready to move forward.
Watters says there is still a clear need for regulations, but expects the next council will take the lead on finalizing a bylaw.
