NEWS RELEASE CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION OF GUELPH AND WELLINGTON
With summer just around the corner, the anticipation of summer camp is growing for local kids. But with the cost of living continuing to climb, many families in Guelph and Wellington County cannot afford to send their children to camp. That is why the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington’s annual ‘Help Send Kids to Camp’ fundraising campaign is so important.
The ‘Help Send Kids to Camp’ fundraising campaign kicks off on May 4 this year and raises funds for the Foundation’s Free to Grow program, which provides funding to families in Guelph and Wellington to help kids participate in activities such as sports, recreation, life-skill building activities, and most popular – camp.
“Every child should have the opportunity to feel the joy of camp,” says Karyn Kirkwood, executive director at the Children’s Foundation. “We see hundreds of applications come in each summer for kids who are looking for funding to participate in the same activities as their peers. Summer camp is about so much more than just childcare – it also serves as an outlet for kids to spend time in nature, develop new skills, and make life-long memories and friendships.”
The Children’s Foundation is proud to have Skyline joining them as the campaign’s presenting sponsor for the third consecutive year, and this year they are helping the Foundation celebrate 35 years in the community by matching up to $35,000 in donations between May 4-22.
“Strong communities are built when kids have opportunities to participate, explore, and develop a sense of belonging through experiences like summer camp,” said Jason Ashdown, Co-Founder & Chief Sustainability Officer, Skyline. “With rising costs making camp increasingly inaccessible for many local families, Skyline recognizes our responsibility to support the Guelph and Wellington community. We’re proud to partner with the Children’s Foundation to help remove financial barriers so more kids can experience the confidence, connection, and joy of camp.”
Last year, the Children’s Foundation helped nearly 400 children and youth experience over 600 weeks of camp experiences, and they anticipate an increased volume this year. Donations make a direct impact, with every $200 raised helping send a child to camp for a week.
Every dollar donated to the Kids to Camp campaign directly funds camp opportunities for local children, nurturing their physical, social, emotional and mental well-being.
