FERGUS – For the first time in franchise history, your Fergus Whalers are the PJHL’s Schmalz Cup Champions!
On Sunday evening at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex, before a record crowd of over 1400 fans, the Whalers prevailed in overtime by a score of 3 to 2 to capture their best-of-seven series against the Tavistock Braves 4 games to 1.
Ryan Forwell scored the overtime winner for Fergus, following up his hat-trick performance in game 4 on Friday night.
Linemates Jake Lessor and Joey Martin also had major contributions, helping the Whalers to both victories.
Andrew McClure’s late marker was the difference in Friday’s 6 to 5 come-from-behind win.
Officials with the Fergus Whalers say winning the PJHL title in just their third year in the league speaks to the dedication of the players, coaching staff, management team, and volunteers.
The team is also thanking sponsors, fans, and the Fergus community, along with surrounding areas, for what they call unbelievable support throughout the season — adding, “It definitely takes a village.”
