ELORA – The sounds of the pipes and drums echoed through downtown Elora Friday evening as the Royal Canadian Legion gets ready to mark a major milestone this year.
According the legion website, 2026 marks a once-in-a-lifetime milestone: a century of standing with Veterans, strengthening communities, and honouring the memory of those who served.
“Founded in 1925 at the Unity Conference, the Legion began with a clear mission — to support Veterans, advocate for their rights, and ensure the act Remembrance continues. On July 17, 1926, the Legion was officially incorporated by a special Act of Parliament, now recognized as our anniversary,” the website says.
Locally, the milestone was marked Friday evening in Elora with a special ceremony at the Elora Cenotaph hosted by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 229.
During the ceremony, wreaths were laid by the Elora Legion members in tribute to veterans and those who served, while members of the Grand Celtic Pipe Band performed to help mark the 100th year of the legion.
The tribute will continue throughout the summer, with members of the Grand Celtic Pipe Band scheduled to perform every Friday evening at 6 p.m. at the Elora Cenotaph in honour of the Legion’s centennial year.
Meanwhile, the Elora Legion is also preparing for a local 100th anniversary celebration on July 17 at the legion. The event will feature a family BBQ by donation, with proceeds supporting the local food bank, along with live music from The No Name Band and friends in the Maple Leaf Room.
