WELLINGTON NORTH – Wellington North has completed Phase 2 enhancements to the West Luther Rail Trail.
In a news release, the township says approximately 5.5 kilometres of the trail, from Wellington Road 16 to the trailhead at Eliza Street in Arthur, has been widened to between 15 and 17 feet the entire length, and the trail has been resurfaced to create a safe and more comfortable experience for walkers and cyclists.
Additional amenities have also been installed along the trail, including:
- Six benches along the trail
- two 10’ x 10’ pavilions at the trail head at Eliza Street for shelter and shade
- a bicycle repair station at the trail head at Eliza Street, allowing for cyclists to make minor repairs during their travels

The project was initiated by a family donation after seeing a video of the trail on The Cardiac Cyclist’s YouTube channel, which highlighted the condition of the trail.
The township says with the completion of Phase 2, a total of 11 kilometres of the West Luther Trail from Eliza Street, Arthur, to the East-West Luther Townline have been enhanced, thanks to this family donation.
“The Township of Wellington North is extremely grateful to our donor for making these trail improvements possible,” said Mayor Andy Lennox. “With the successful completion of Phase 2, this project has significantly enhanced the trail for residents and visitors alike. As a small municipality, we are fortunate to have organizations, volunteers, and community members step up to partner with us on initiatives like this. Without this support, we would not have the high-quality trail we can all enjoy today.”

“As Mayor Lennox stated, the Township is very thankful to our donor for their contributions to enhancing the West Luther Rail Trail,” said Ward 4 Councillor Steve McCabe. “Wellington North is fortunate to have great partners who work with us to bring projects like this to life without burdening the taxpayers of the township. This project is a great example of those partnerships, and on behalf of our residents, I thank our donor for bringing this project to life and making the West Luther Rail Trail a trail that others can be envious of.”
