CENTRE WELLINGTON- Officer assaulted in intimate partner violence investigation. CEW deployed, seven charges laid.
On May 30, 2026, at approximately 10:30 a.m., the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to individuals on a bridge, with a witness observing one individual striking the other, and then went to a nearby residential area within Fergus. Officers quickly attended to the area and located the two individuals nearby.
While on scene, the individual responsible for the previous assault, was then involved in a physical confrontation with officers, which resulted in officers using a conducted energy weapon (CEW) to gain immediately control and effect an arrest without incident.
An Officer and the suspect were then taken to hospital as a precaution.
As a result of the investigation, a 56-year-old of Fergus is charged under the Criminal Code with:
- Assault – Spousal
- Assault with intent to resist arrest
- Assault a peace officer with a weapon
- Fail to comply with probation order (four counts)
The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
The OPP will not release names to protect the identity of the victim(s).
