GUELPH – On June 2, as a result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Unit, the Guelph Police Service executed search warrants following a targeted fentanyl trafficking investigation and seized nearly two kilograms of fentanyl believed to be intended for distribution in Guelph. Four people were arrested in connection with the investigation.
The investigation began earlier this spring and focused on individuals believed to be supplying a potent form of fentanyl linked to a recent increase in overdoses reported by Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health.
“Our officers remain focused on disrupting the illegal drug trade and reducing the harm fentanyl and other illegal drugs cause in our community,” said Guelph Police Chief Gord Cobey. “Investigations like this are an important part of our ongoing commitment to community safety which includes protecting our citizens and holding offenders accountable.”
Search warrants were executed at multiple locations in Guelph, Brantford and North York by the Guelph Police Service’s Drug Enforcement Unit. Further support was provided by the Tactics and Rescue Unit, Break, Enter and Auto Theft Unit along with the Intelligence Unit. In addition to approximately 1.9 kilograms of suspected fentanyl with an estimated street value of $200,000 officers seized more than 50 grams of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of $5,000, Canadian currency, digital scales, cutting agents, ammunition and a stolen e-bike.
As a result of the investigation, the Guelph Police Service drug unit laid the following charges against four individuals:
- a 37-year-old male from Brantford, who was previously charged and is awaiting sentencing for possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl, was charged with trafficking fentanyl, possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl, possession of proceeds of crime, fail to comply with judicial release order. He was remanded into custody at his bail hearing and is scheduled to appear back in court on July 3.
- a 32-year-old male from Guelph is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order. He was remanded into custody at his bail hearing and is scheduled to appear back in court on June 8.
- a 46-year-old male from Guelph is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking x 2 fentanyl and cocaine, possession of property obtained by crime, breach of probation. There was already an outstanding warrant for his arrest for possession for the purpose of trafficking. He was remanded into custody at his bail hearing and is scheduled to appear back in court on June 5.
- 36-year-old female from Brantford is charged with trafficking fentanyl, possession of property obtained by crime. She was released on bail is scheduled to appear back in court on July 7.
