NEWS RELEASE WELLINGTON COUNTY OPP
(CENTRE WELLINGTON TOWNSHIP, ON) – Two officers have been assaulted during an incident in Fergus.
On July 11, 2026, at approximately 8:00 a.m., members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended a residence in Fergus to conduct a compliance check on an individual who had previously been released from custody in relation to other criminal matters.
Officers attempted to take an individual into custody. During the arrest, two officers were assaulted and sustained minor injuries.
As a result of the investigation, a 21-year-old from Fergus, is charged under the Criminal Code with:
- Assault Peace Officer (two counts)
- Obstruct Peace Officer (two counts)
- Mischief – destroys or damages property
- Failure to comply with Release Order – other than to attend court
The accused was held in police custody pending a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph.
Additionally, an 18-year-old from Fergus, is charged under the Criminal Code with:
- Assault Peace Officer
- Obstruct Peace Officer
- Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
- Theft under $5,000
The accused was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph on September 29, 2026.
