WELLINGTON COUNTY – Residents across Wellington, Grey, and Dufferin counties will continue to have access to regional transit while work moves ahead on a long-term transportation plan.
According to a joint press release from the counties of Bruce, Dufferin, Grey and Wellington, along with Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit (SMART), interim bus service is being maintained and expanded while a Regional Transit Study continues.
County councils and the SMART Board have received an update on the study, with Dillon Consulting continuing work on a draft unified regional transit plan. The consulting firm is expected to present the draft plan to councils this fall, with final decisions on the long-term transit strategy expected in 2027.
In the meantime, several transit routes will continue operating to ensure residents are not left without service. The Grey Transit Route 2, connecting Dundalk and Orangeville, as well as the Guelph Owen Sound Transit (GOST) route, will remain in service.
Officials also announced that Grey Transit Route 5, linking Owen Sound and Wiarton, will return this fall. A seasonal extension of the route to Sauble Beach is also being considered for the summer of 2027, pending funding approval, to help meet increased tourism demand.
The counties say maintaining these interim services will preserve existing ridership and provide reliable transportation while long-term regional transit options are finalized. The service is funded through each county’s approved 2026 budget with additional support from the Ontario Transit Investment Fund.
