CENTRE WELLINGTON – Centre Wellington’s fire service could see significant changes over the next decade as Council prepares to review an updated Fire Master Plan on Monday.
The plan provides a roadmap for Centre Wellington Fire Rescue as the community continues to grow. The Township is expected to surpass 58-thousand residents by 2051, with much of that growth taking place in areas such as south Fergus.
The report says the current fire service is effective and well-regarded, but additional investment will be needed to keep up with growth, changing risks and increasing demands on firefighters.
One of the major recommendations is the construction of a new fire station in northeast Fergus. The Township is also being advised to investigate the possibility of including a shared fire training facility at that location.
Longer term, the plan recommends relocating the existing Fergus fire station to a future development area in southeast Fergus, more than ten years from now, to improve coverage across the Township.
The plan also calls for a phased increase in daytime staffing, eventually adding approximately six full-time firefighters over the next ten years.
Other recommendations include hiring another Fire Prevention and Public Education Officer, improving technology and records management, and strengthening firefighter training, recruitment and retention.
The report says these recommendations would be considered through future budget and capital planning processes.
Council is being asked to receive the report for information and comment Monday night, with staff expected to return in September seeking formal endorsement of the Fire Master Plan.
