ELORA -A local fundraiser is helping a young Elora girl living with an ultra-rare genetic disorder take an important next step in her care.
Lily, who has CASK, a genetic disorder that affects how the brain grows, develops and functions, was recently selected as the beneficiary of the Elora Firefighters Association’s annual Canada Day pancake breakfast fundraiser.
According to a post on the Help Lily Bloom Instagram page, Lily’s family was “shocked and incredibly honoured” to learn the firefighters had chosen to support their daughter.
The fundraiser brought in $6,000 for Lily’s journey.
The family says the donation will help send Lily to an upcoming intensive in Virginia, where she will have the opportunity to work with specialists experienced in treating children with CASK-related disorders.
The family says they are “SO excited for this next step for Lily,” adding that every intensive brings “new opportunities, new goals, and new possibilities.”
They also thanked the Elora Firefighters Association for choosing Lily and rallying the community behind her.
The family says the support from the community is helping provide opportunities they “simply could not provide on our own.”
They ended their message by thanking everyone who attended the pancake breakfast, donated, shared Lily’s story, or supported the fundraiser — saying they feel “so incredibly lucky to call this community home.”
The family’s message was simple: “Thank you so much for helping Lily bloom.”
