GUELPH – A suspected small blue-green algae bloom has been spotted at Guelph Lake Conservation Area.
The Grand River Conservation Authority says the algae has been observed along the northeast shoreline and near the dam in the Guelph Lake reservoir.
Previous notices remain in effect for suspected blue-green algae at the Shade’s Mills Conservation Area reservoir, near the dam and islands, as well as at the boat launch at Belwood Lake Conservation Area.
The GRCA says, “Historically, blue-green algae blooms have occurred at the Grand River Conservation Authority’s (GRCA) Belwood Lake, Conestogo Lake, Guelph Lake and Woolwich reservoirs, as well as at Snyder’s Flats. There is permanent signage at these locations advising visitors of the potential for blue-green algae blooms and precautions that should be taken.”
Visitors are being reminded to keep children and pets away from visible algae, avoid contact with the water, and not drink or otherwise use the water. People are also being advised not to eat fish from the lake and to avoid swimming where algae or scum is visible.
Canoeists, kayakers and paddle boarders are also being asked to avoid touching the algae.
The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health have been notified.
Some types of blue-green algae can produce toxins that are harmful to people and pets. Anyone who develops symptoms after coming into contact with the algae should contact their doctor.
