GUELPH – Guelph General Hospital is celebrating the completion of a new space designed to expand emergency mental health and addictions services.
The Angel Gabriel Foundation Centre for Mental Health and Addictions is located within the hospital’s main building and is expected to begin providing services later this month.
The redeveloped space includes a larger short-stay assessment unit, increasing capacity from four beds to eight. The additional space will support assessment, monitoring and treatment for adults experiencing psychiatric emergencies.
“By working closely with partners such as Homewood Health Centre, we are advancing the delivery of emergency mental health and addictions care in our community,” said Mark Walton, President and CEO of Guelph General Hospital.
“We were pleased to tour the redesigned space earlier this week with the Minister of Health and Deputy Premier, Sylvia Jones, and share how our teams will be better able to support patients in both individual and group settings. This space will help patients stabilize sooner and return safely to the community.”
The Ontario government approved the hospital’s emergency services redevelopment in April of 2025.
The project represents a $23.4-million investment from the provincial government, donors to The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital’s Together, We Care campaign, and the City of Guelph.
Homewood Health Centre President and Chief of Staff Dr. Carlos Lalonde says the project builds on a long-standing partnership.
“This project reflects a deep-rooted partnership that has supported emergency mental health and addictions patients in our community for many years, and it strengthens our ability to work together in the future, when and where people need us most,” said Lalonde.
Construction will continue in the hospital’s main emergency services area in the coming months.
The emergency department remains open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, although the hospital says parking will continue to be a challenge during construction and visitors are encouraged to plan ahead.
