WELLINGTON COUNTY – Harvest season is underway across Wellington County, and the Wellington County OPP is reminding motorists to use extra caution on rural roads.
Farmers are moving tractors, combines and other large equipment between fields and farms. These vehicles often travel at much slower speeds and can take up more than one lane, requiring drivers to slow down, be patient and give them plenty of space.
Motorists are encouraged to:
- Slow down when approaching agricultural equipment. Give yourself plenty of time to react and adjust your speed accordingly.
- Give farm equipment plenty of space. Large machinery may be wider than the lane and may need to move onto the shoulder or make wide turns.
- Be patient. Agricultural equipment may be travelling at significantly lower speeds than other vehicles. Never attempt an unsafe pass; instead, wait for a safe and legal opportunity to pass.
- Watch for turns. Farm equipment may make wide or unexpected-looking movements as operators enter fields, driveways or farm lanes.
- Be extra cautious on rural roads. Farm vehicles can enter or exit fields with little warning, and mud or debris on the roadway may create additional hazards.
- Be mindful of horse-drawn vehicles. Sudden noise and movement can cause panic.
The OPP says rural road safety is a shared responsibility, and farmers are also reminded to ensure their equipment has proper lighting and signage so they remain visible to motorists.
