ELORA – The Township of Centre Wellington is moving ahead with plans to replace the multi-use recreational pad at Bissell Park in Elora.
Council approved a staff recommendation Monday night to proceed with the construction tender process for the replacement project, based on the current design.
The existing pad has reached the end of its service life, with extensive cracking and uneven areas affecting its safety, performance and accessibility.
Staff says the redesigned facility is intended to support a range of recreational and community uses such as basketball, ball hockey, hockey, yoga, pickleball, lacrosse, dog training, fitness training, and community events.
“The replacement facility will also include accessibility improvements for people with varied mobility needs,” the report said.
According to the report, the proposed design includes “replacement of the existing surface with a new concrete multi-use pad, together with associated site improvements such as accessible pathways, improved connections to the adjacent pavilion, sports equipment and court markings, seating, upgraded lighting, protective boards, safety netting, drainage improvements, and provisions for a future refrigerated ice system.”
The current construction estimate is about $728,000. The Township has approximately $964,000 in approved project funding, but staff currently estimate an $8,600 shortfall after accounting for expenses already incurred.
Staff will finalize the design, permits, and tender documents this fall, with construction expected to begin in spring 2027.
The replacement pad is anticipated to open to the public in summer 2027.
