WELLINGTON COUNTY – Wellington County OPP is reminding motorcycle riders to take extra precautions as cooler temperatures and shorter daylight hours arrive.
The OPP says changing weather, fallen leaves, reduced traction, and increased wildlife activity can all create additional hazards for riders during the fall.
Motorcyclists are encouraged to keep the following in mind:
- Watch for fallen leaves — Wet leaves can be as slippery as ice and may hide potholes, road debris, lane markings, or uneven pavement. Riders should reduce their speed and avoid sudden braking or steering when travelling through leaf-covered areas.
- Ride with increased visibility — Shorter daylight hours and changing weather can make motorcycles more difficult for other motorists to see. Riders should wear high-visibility gear, make sure all lights are working, and avoid staying in vehicle blind spots.
- Watch for wildlife, especially deer — Deer activity increases during the fall, particularly around dawn and dusk. The OPP says deer can enter roadways unexpectedly, and riders should be prepared for additional animals if they spot one near the road.
- Know when to end the season — Riders should regularly assess weather and road conditions before heading out. If ice, snow or freezing temperatures make conditions unsafe, consider postponing the trip.
Police say motorcycles provide less protection than passenger vehicles, leaving riders particularly vulnerable when road conditions deteriorate.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” the Wellington County OPP says, encouraging motorists and motorcyclists to slow down, stay alert and adapt their driving or riding habits to seasonal conditions.
The OPP is also encouraging motorcycle riders to inspect their bikes regularly, remain vigilant for wildlife and adjust their riding habits as conditions change.
