The annual removal is expected to be completed by Friday, October 30, depending on weather conditions.
The booms and buoys are installed each spring upstream of GRCA dams to warn paddlers, anglers and boaters to stay away from the structures.
The GRCA says the devices need to be removed before winter because ice and high-water flows could damage or displace them.
The authority follows Transport Canada regulations requiring safety booms and buoys to be in place during the navigation season, which runs from May through October.
However, the GRCA warns that the removal of the seasonal devices does not mean the dangers around dams have disappeared.
“Hazards associated with dams and other water control structures remain present year-round, even when booms and buoys are no longer in place,” the authority says.
Water flowing through gates and valves or over dams can create strong undertows and currents, posing a serious risk of injury or drowning.
The GRCA urges anyone continuing to use local waterways to exercise extra caution, heed warning signs and stay away from dams.
The authority also promotes dam safety through community events, school education programs and water safety resources for children.
More information about dam safety is available on the GRCA’s website at grandriver.ca.
