FERGUS – If you were in downtown Fergus on Saturday for the Halloween Street Walk, you may have noticed Centre Wellington Fire Rescue crews training along the Grand River near the Milligan Pedestrian Bridge at Templin Gardens.
Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Karn says local firefighters, along with members of neighbouring departments, were taking part in a technical rope rescue course through the Ontario Fire College.
He says it’s an important skill for firefighters to learn as part of their technical rescue training.
Karn says while Saturday’s exercise was just training, these are the kinds of skills that could be needed during an emergency.

He says this type of rescue is very technical but is very safe.
On a lighter note, Karn says crews didn’t realize until today that their training coincided with the Halloween Haunt in Downtown Fergus, but says it turned out to be a great opportunity for residents to see firefighters in action and learn more about the skills they use to keep the community safe.
He says the upgraded training has taken place over two weekends, with the goal of eventually teaching all Centre Wellington firefighters these highline rescue techniques so they can be used in future emergencies if needed.
