WELLINGTON COUNTY – With more people buying and selling items through online marketplaces, Wellington County OPP is reminding residents to take a few extra precautions when meeting up to make a deal.
The reminder comes during Crime Prevention Week, with police encouraging people to use designated Project Safe Trade zones when completing online transactions.
The zones are located in the public parking lots of the OPP detachments in Fergus, Rockwood and Teviotdale, giving buyers and sellers a safe, neutral place to meet and exchange items.
The OPP also reminds residents not to share their home address or personal information with someone they don’t know online, and to arrange meetings in public places whenever possible.
Police say using these designated meeting spots can help reduce the risk of fraud, theft and other problems when buying or selling online.
The Project Safe Trade zones are available throughout the year, not just during Crime Prevention Week.
The Wellington County OPP encourages anyone buying or selling through online marketplaces to make use of the locations and put safety first.
The OPP can be reached anytime at 1-888-310-1122.
