MINTO – The Town of Minto has purchased a downtown Palmerston property as part of an effort to create more attainable and affordable housing options in the community.
The property, located at 212 Main Street West, includes seven residential apartments and three commercial spaces.
The township says the purchase was funded through the Wellington County Housing Development Fund and supports Council’s commitment to exploring more housing options for residents at different stages of life and with different needs.
Mayor Dave Turton says the purchase is an opportunity to address a community need while making better use of an existing downtown property.
“This is an opportunity for the Town to address a real community need while making better use of an existing downtown property,” said Turton. “Attainable/ Affordable housing is important to the future of Minto. This project will help provide housing options for residents while also supporting a vibrant downtown Palmerston.”
The Town hopes to begin work on the property soon, with the goal of having the apartments available during the first quarter of 2027.
The township says the three commercial spaces will also provide an opportunity to support downtown activity and local businesses, with the Town working toward finding tenants to fill those spaces.
“The project aligns with Council’s strategic priorities, including exploring a greater mix of housing options for all income levels and supporting a strong, vibrant local economy. By investing in an existing property, the Town is taking a practical approach to meeting housing needs and contributing to the long-term stability of the community,” the township said in a news release.
Turton says working with Wellington County has helped make the purchase possible.
“This is about looking ahead and making the most of opportunities that can benefit Minto for years to come,” added Turton. “Working with Wellington County has helped make this project possible, and we look forward to moving ahead and seeing the benefits for our community.”
The Town says it will provide further updates as work on the property progresses.
