WELLINGTON NORTH – Council in Wellington North Township has voted to support a decorative veterans’ crosswalk in Mount Forest and Arthur, while banning all other non-standard pavement markings across the township.
The decision came during Tuesday’s council meeting, after staff recommended a full ban on decorative crosswalks over concerns about safety, accessibility, maintenance, and durability during winter weather.
However, Councillor Steve McCabe introduced an amendment to allow veterans’ themed crosswalks at King Street and Main Street in Mount Forest, and at Frederick and George Streets in Arthur.
Councillors voiced support for this amendment, including Councillor Sherry Burke.
Council also directed staff to work with local legions on installation, maintenance, funding agreements, and a consistent design for both Arthur and Mount Forest.
McCabe said that local service groups may also assist the legions with future maintenance costs.
The amendment passed unanimously, allowing the two veterans’ crosswalks only while prohibiting all other decorative crosswalks.
Meanwhile, just last week, Centre Wellington council supported further exploring the feasibility of veterans-themed crosswalks in Fergus and Elora despite similar staff concerns.
