WELLINGTON NORTH – A report on decorative crosswalks (Veterans and Pride-themed crosswalks) is returning to Wellington North council.
According to the report going to council on Tuesday, staff are recommending council generally prohibit the use of non-standard pavement markings and decorative crosswalks, pointing to concerns over winter maintenance, safety, accessibility, and vandalism.
The report says that while staff does not recommend the widespread use of non-standard pavement markers throughout the township overall, staff do recognize the importance of the Royal Canadian Legions in our communities and the significance of a decorative Veterans crosswalk.
The discussion follows a request from Councillor Steve McCabe to explore veterans crosswalks in Arthur and Mount Forest, honouring members of the Canadian Armed Forces.
In Centre Wellington, earlier this week, council supported further exploring the feasibility of veterans-themed crosswalks in Fergus and Elora despite similar staff concerns
If Wellington North council opposes the recommendation, the proposed projects would cost an estimated 26-thousand-500 dollars.
Council will consider the report at Tuesday’s 7 pm meeting.
